Gov. Wes Moore today dipped into the ranks of his health department to choose a new leader for the Maryland Insurance Administration.

Moore announced the appointment of Marie Grant as the MIA commissioner. She will succeed interim Commissioner Joy Hatchette as acting commissioner on Oct. 1, pending confirmation by the Senate Executive Nominations Committee during the 2025 legislative session.

Hatchette will return to her previous role within the administration as associate commissioner for consumer education and advocacy.

Grant is an attorney and state and federal policy expert with nearly 20 years of experience in strategy and regulation in both the public and private sector, focusing on insurance and health care payment, the governor’s office said in a news release.

She currently serves as assistant secretary for health policy at the Maryland Department of Health. Her previous roles include director of the Office of Governmental Affairs at the Maryland Department of Health and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield vice president of public policy.

Grant began her career at the Maryland Department of Legislative Services as nonpartisan committee counsel to the House Health and Government Operations Committee and the Senate Finance Committee.

Grant received a B.A. in public health from the Johns Hopkins University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

The MIA is the state’s insurance regulator, responsible, for among other things, setting premium rates for providers on the state’s health insurance exchange.
