Archdiocese to hold second annual Gun Buyback event in August

Building on the success of 2023’s Community Peacebuilding and Resource Fair, the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Health by Southwest, and other community partners will host a Gun Buyback on Aug. 10.

The event will be held in the parking lot of Edmonson High school and provides community members the safe and legal means by which they can relinquish any firearms in their possession, no questions asked.

Last year’s Community Peacebuilding and Resource Fair removed 362 firearms from the streets of Baltimore in a call for peace. This included handguns, semi-automatic weapons, and stolen guns. Ten resource partners participated, including Youth Advocate Programs, Moms Demand Action, and the Franciscan Center.

Additionally, the groups provided information on employment services, mental wellness services, behavior health services, expungements, and more. Congressman Kweisi Mfume, Maryland State Senator Jill Carter, and Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby all attended and made remarks.

“This event is about building a coalition for peace and channeling hope to the community,” said the Rev. Michael Murphy, pastor of St. Joseph’s Monastery Parish and founding member of Health by Southwest. “We are taking action that is within our control as a community and are working together toward a better quality of life for all.”

Those looking to turn in firearms should bring the unloaded firearms in the trunk of their car and await further instructions at the event location. There is a three firearms limit per vehicle. Participants will be reimbursed $100 for handguns, rifles, ghost guns, and shotguns. Participants will be reimbursed $200 for semi-automatic and fully automatic assault weapons.

The event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of Edmonson High School, located at 501 N. Athol Ave., Baltimore, MD.

The money used to fund the buybacks are raised through donations. If you are interested in donating to the August 2024 Gun Buyback program, click this link. Learn more about the Gun Buyback program by clicking this link.
