Baltimore mothers voice fears after shooting near children’s park

Two southwest Baltimore mothers spoke with FOX45 the day after a 20-year-old man was shot and killed at the Westside Shopping Center.

The shooting took place around 5:45 Tuesday evening, just across the street from Catherine Street Park, where both mothers bring the kids to cool off in the sprinklers.

Latasha, who lives about five blocks away, missed yesterday’s shooting by a chance malfunction.

“I would have been leaving from here like around 6 yesterday if the sprinklers were on,” said Latasha.

She has an infant, a soon-to-be two-year-old, and a four-year-old.

“My biggest fear for my kids is dying at a young age from the streets, from something they didn’t do,” said Latasha.

Jocelyn Abrego moved to America, in particular Baltimore, from El Salvador for a better life for her children.

“Every time that we go out to the park, or go out shopping, we’re always careful when going out,” said Abrego.

“When one comes to the United States, you think that things will be different from home,” said Abrego.

According to the latest numbers, there have been at least 10 deadly shootings in July so far.

However, according to BPD data, homicides and non-fatal shootings are down from this time last year.

So far, 102 people have been killed, compared to 152 last year.
