Memorial art exhibition for Jo Ulrich at Gallery 1148

A memorial exhibition honoring the works of Jo Ulrich (1956 — 2023) will be on display at Gallery 1448 beginning on Aug 10.

“Jo Ulrich: A Life Interrupted” will showcase the artist’s paintings as a tribute to her remarkable achievements and an acknowledgement of her struggles.

Ulrich began painting in 2017, six years before she died by ending her life, leaving behind 40 paintings, most of which never left her studio. Her friends knew of her deep-seeded challenges, wrestling with severe childhood trauma and abuse, leading to her struggling with horrific memories and a damaged sense of self-worth. Ulrich worked hard to embrace what set her apart and made her extraordinary.

She is described as having been a force of nature. “An unbounded spirit, friend, feminist, truth teller, confronter of bullies, gardener, mother to fairies, animals and all the children she never had, a caregiver for literally anyone in need, a weaver of magic, and an advocate for the underserved,” reads the press release. “She wielded a sharp wit and abundant creativity.”

Proceeds from the sale of her paintings will go to the Jo Ulrich Fund for Women’s Health at the Baltimore Community Foundation.

“Jo Ulrich: A Life Interrupted” will have an Opening Reception on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. After that, the exhibition will run until Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024.

Hours for Gallery 1448 are noon to 5 p.m. The exhibition will be on view Aug. 10-11 and 17-18, or by appointment.
