MSDE Rolls Out No-Cost Summer Feeding Program

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has launched a summer meal program providing free meals to children and teenagers under the age of 18 across the state. This initiative, funded by the USDA and supported by local sponsors, aims to address the nutritional needs of over 500,000 students who qualify for this benefit during the school off-season.

The program is a continuation of the National School Lunch Program, which supports students during the academic year. With summer break posing a challenge for many families who rely on school meals, this program offers a crucial service. “Many families rely on the National School Lunch Program to provide healthy and nutritious meals,” explained Dr. Carey M. Wright, State Superintendent of Schools. “Programs that provide free meals for Maryland families when school is not in session ensure that students remain ready to learn all year long.”

Participating sites across Maryland are serving free meals or snacks with no requirement for ID presentation. The distribution of these meals is managed through various formats including in-person and to-go options at approximately 800 designated sites. The operational days and hours of these sites vary, ensuring broad access to all eligible youths.

Further support is offered by agencies sponsoring residential camps and closed-enrolled sites, such as summer day camps, which will inform participants about meal availability and application procedures where necessary.

For families and organizations seeking more information on these vital nutrition programs, the MSDE Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs is available at 410-767-0219. Additional details can also be found online at eatsmartmaryland.org.

As an equal opportunity provider, the USDA emphasizes that these services are available to all, without discrimination. The commitment to ensuring no child goes hungry during the summer months is a key component of this initiative.
